TITLE: Portrait of a Gentleman ARTIST: Attributed to the School of Gilbert Stuart MEDIUM: oil on canvas DATE: 18th century DIMENSIONS: 32" x 24"

Before Treatment (left): The painting was found to have two distinct layers of varnish (center), and false sideburns. The sideburns were an embellishment from a previous restoration, painted on top of the varnish layer. The actual portrait (right)) Is far more dramatic in its original form.

Left: The original canvas had been lined at least twice before. The lining adhesive was ashpaltum, and had to be mechanically removed.
